The Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon is noteworthy in rapidly urbanising regions, as it adds to the large-scale warming due to global climate change. In the region encompassing the Mediterranean and the Middle East–North Africa, which is warming about twice as fast as the global average, urban areas are warming faster that the rural ones, according to recent studies. The observed increasing rate of heat extremes and the further projected warming raise concerns about the human comfort and survivability and related socio-economic impacts in areas across this region. This workshop brings together climate science experts from the region to present and discuss scientific progress in the monitoring, analysis, and prediction of the urban heat island and mitigation strategies of its associated impacts. The workshop includes contributions from Action 2.3 “Climate Crisis and Urban heat Island” of the CLIMPACT project in Greece (“National Network for Research on Climate Change and its Impacts”).

Climate change has emerged as one of the most serious dangers to world heritage, both at present and in the immediate future. The Eastern Mediterranean, in particular, is already affected by the impacts of the climate crisis. The region, an epicenter of world civilization, preserves an extremely rich body of archaeological treasures and cultural traditions which are now under direct and indirect threats. Besides the impacts on archaeological sites, monuments and landscapes, the loss of cultural heritage has devastating effects on local communities and societies, thus making mitigation policies and adaptation measures an urgent necessity for a sustainable future. We need to document, analyze and understand the remnants of the past and their socioeconomic relevance as we enter an era of crisis and volatility. As a result, the humanities, the sciences and the technological fields, are expected to respond to the challenge and to relate to interdisciplinary efforts to mitigate the impacts as well as to adjust to a rapidly changing world. Without doubt, advances in science and technology can provide new tools and offer innovative methodological perspectives which can significantly contribute to the preservation and protection of our cultural heritage.
This workshop will provide participants with an introductory discussion of the challenges facing cultural heritage as result of the climate crisis. Workshop contributors from a range of different fields will offer short responses and will share expertise and good practices from their efforts to engage the problem. Participants will have the opportunity to pose questions as well as to share experiences related to the impacts of climate change on cultural heritage. We aim at a lively exchange of ideas which will help us to frame broad aspects of the challenge as well as to develop a shared understanding of the urgent need to preserve our common heritage.
